Scholarship

The Alton Section NCNW, Inc. Scholarship Fund was established in 2018. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to individuals that are pursuing post high school studies. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate the qualities of our founder, Mary McLeod Bethune.

Scholarships are awarded annually provided funds are available.

Scholarship Awards

The Alton Section NCNW, Inc. Scholarship awards scholarships based on a comprehensive process. Areas that are reviewed by the committee include but are not limited to the following: Demonstrate Ability to Lead and Serve, Academic Accomplishments, Community Service, References, Personal Essay and Financial Need. Scholarship funds are paid directly to the recipient. Scholarships are awarded annually. The Alton Section NCNW, Inc. Scholarship is awarded without regard to race, color, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. Scholarships awarded are based upon the availability of funds and additional qualifying criteria.

Criteria

  • Applicant must have maintained a “C” average or above throughout the last three (3) years of High School.
  • Applicant must be a senior student at Alton High School, Marquette Catholic High School, or Mississippi Valley Christian School. Students must reside in the service area of Alton School District #11.
  • Applicant must plan to attend one of the following accredited institutions the semester following graduation from High School:
    • 4-Year College/University
    • Community/Junior College
    • Technical School/Vocational School
  • Applicant must submit a 250-word essay. The essay should answer: What qualities do you possess that demonstrate the qualities of our founder, Mary McLeod Bethune?
    • Typed double spaced
    • Times New Roman Font
    • 12-point font
    • 1-inch top, side, bottom margins
  • Applicants must be available in early April for an interview if requested.
  • Applicant must complete and submit a Scholarship Application by March 15, 2024.

Instructions

  • The DEADLINE for scholarship applications is March 15, 2024.
  • The application must be filled out by the applicant.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • If any question does not apply to you in this application, please put N/A in the space.
  • Type or print legibly. Illegible applications will not be returned to you.
  • Include all requested attachments.
  • You will be notified by email in April regarding the status of your application.

Timeline

  • Applications are due Friday, March 15 of the current calendar year.
  • Applicants are notified if awarded a scholarship in May.

Scholarship Applicants Must Provide

  • A completed application forms
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation
  • An official high school transcript
  • Complete financial affidavit and provide parents/applicants W-2 for the previous tax year to the application, if applicant checks the financial need option.

Scholarship Awards

  • Awards will be distributed upon receipt of proof of acceptance at an institution for postsecondary studies.
  • The recipient must provide the correct mailing address of their institution and their current mailing address.
  • The recipient must be a resident of Alton School District #11.
